Why flicker-free matters

Standard LED drivers can have 30-50% output ripple — the LED brightness rises and falls 100 or 120 times per second following the mains AC frequency. Your eyes don't consciously see this flicker, but your brain processes it. After hours under flickering light, people experience eye strain, headaches, reduced focus, and visual fatigue. The IEEE PAR 1789 standard formalises this — workplace lighting should keep flicker percentage below specific thresholds.

A flicker-free LED driver applies additional filtering inside the driver to deliver near-pure DC to the LED chain. Smooth Power's flicker-free range targets under-5% ripple — well below the perceptual and camera-detection thresholds. The light appears completely steady, smartphone video captures it cleanly without banding, and people working under it for full work shifts notice the difference.

For photography studios, video production sets, broadcast studios and increasingly residential bedrooms and kids' study areas, flicker-free is now the specified standard, not an upgrade.

Where flicker-free drivers are essential

Offices & co-working

People spend 8-10 hours under office LED panels. Flicker contributes to end-of-day eye strain and reduces focus through the afternoon.

Schools & classrooms

Long study sessions under fluctuating light cause headaches in children — flicker-free panels make a measurable difference in attention.

Hospitals & clinics

Patient rooms, OPDs, examination rooms. Flicker-free is a requirement for procedures that need stable colour rendering, and for staff who work full shifts under the lights.

Photography studios

On-camera banding from flickering lights is a deal-breaker for product photography and video. Flicker-free drivers are non-negotiable here.

Broadcast & video sets

YouTube studios, news sets, podcast rooms, video-call rooms. Camera sees flicker even when human eyes don't.

Residential bedrooms & study

Increasingly specified for kids' study rooms and master bedrooms — the same eye-strain logic applies at home.

How flicker happens — and how we eliminate it

A typical AC-to-DC driver rectifies 230V AC into pulsating DC, then smooths it through a filter. Cheap drivers use minimal filtering — just enough to keep the LED running, but with significant ripple at 100Hz (twice the 50Hz mains). The LED brightness pulses at 100Hz; eyes adapt at conscious level, brain doesn't.

Flicker-free design adds two stages: a higher-capacitance smoothing stage on the DC bus, and active current regulation that holds the LED current steady even when the DC bus voltage briefly dips. The result is a near-pure DC output that doesn't track the mains ripple. Our flicker-free range achieves under-5% ripple — well below the threshold where smartphones detect banding and below the IEEE PAR 1789 workplace recommendation.

The trade-off: flicker-free drivers cost more than basic drivers, run slightly warmer, and are physically a bit larger. For workplace, healthcare and studio use, that trade-off is overwhelmingly worth it.

Frequently asked questions

What does "flicker-free" actually mean?

Output ripple below 5% — the LED brightness varies by less than 5% from its average level. At that level, flicker is below human visual perception, below smartphone camera detection thresholds, and below the IEEE PAR 1789 workplace lighting recommendation.

How do I test if my existing LEDs flicker?

Easiest test: hold your phone camera up to the LED panel and view the live preview at high frame rate. If you see horizontal banding moving up/down the frame, the driver is flickering. A flicker-free driver shows a steady, even image.

What wattages are available?

Our standard flicker-free range covers 12W to 200W. The two most-asked models are 24W (SP-315, for tubelights and small panels) and 50W (SP-9377, for studio panels and large fixtures). Custom wattages and form factors available from 500-unit MOQ.

Can I retrofit existing fixtures with a flicker-free driver?

Yes if the existing fixture's LED voltage and current match our driver spec. Swap the existing driver in the housing, wire to the same LED chain. Most retrofits take 5 minutes. We can advise on compatibility — just send us a photo of the existing driver's spec label.

Do flicker-free drivers also support dimming?

Yes — flicker-free and dimmable are independent features. Our dimmable flicker-free variants support TRIAC, 0-10V and DALI dimming protocols, and stay flicker-free across the full dimming range.

Can we get flicker-free drivers branded for our OEM fixtures?

Yes — we OEM for LED light brands across India. Custom output, form factor, branding on driver label, your packaging. WhatsApp +91 82872 62090 or email sales@smoothpower.in.
